Location
Via del Castello 34011 Duino Aurisina (Trieste)
Duino Castle was built in the 14th century on the ruins of a Roman military outpost. In the 18th century, it became a cultural and humanistic centre, a tradition that continues to this day. Numerous prestigious guests have stayed here over the years, including Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi), Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and the Counts of Chambord, Johann Strauss, Franz Liszt, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gabriele d'Annunzio, Paul Valery and finally, the most illustrious of all, the Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, author of the ‘Duino Elegies’ (the first two composed during his stay at the Castle as a guest of Princess Marie Thurn und Taxis). You can visit more than 18 rooms, filled with evidence of the centuries-old history of the Princes of Torre e Tasso and their ancestors. Guided tours in various languages can be booked in advance. Not to be missed: the Palladian Staircase, a masterpiece of architecture; the fortepiano from 1810 on which Liszt played; and the extraordinary view of the gulf that can be admired from the outer ramparts overlooking the sea and from the panoramic terrace of the tower, which stands on a Roman guard post from the Diocletian period (3rd century AD).
