When it comes to brain health, you often immediately think of mental exercise, regular sleep, and stress management. All fundamental aspects, of course, but there is an equally important element that starts directly from the table: nutrition. Among the most studied nutrients for brain well-being are Omega 3s, essential fats that play a key role in cognitive function and protecting the nervous system.
Omega 3s are polyunsaurous fatty acids that are defined as "essential" because our body is unable to produce them independently in sufficient quantities. They must therefore be introduced with the diet. There are three main ones:
- ALA (alpha-linoleic acid): mainly present in flaxseed, chia, walnuts and some plant sources.
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): typical of oily fish and marine products.
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): particularly important for the brain and retina.
Among these, DHA is the most represented of the celebral cells. The brain is composed largely of lipids, that is, "good" fats that make up its structure. DHA, in particular, helps keep neuronal membranes fluid and functional, facilitating communication between neurons.
Furthermore, several studies have observed an association between low Omega 3 levels and increased vulnerability to mood disorders. A balanced diet rich in these fats can contribute to psychological well-being and’ emotional balance
Omega 3 intake is essential at all stages of life, including during pregnancy and early life, as DHA is essential for the development of the baby's brain and vision. For this reason, maternal nutrition deserves particular attention.
In adults, a proper intake of Omega 3 can support cognitive performance and mental productivity, as well as support cardiovascular health. In the elderly, a diet rich in protective nutrients, including Omega 3s, is part of a preventative strategy to keep the brain active longer.
The main sources of Omega 3 are:
- oily fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel) - salmon
- trout
- flax seeds grind5
- chia seeds
- walnuts
- algae and algae-derived oils
To obtain EPA and DHA directly, fish and algae are the most effective sources.
Integration is not always necessary. In many cases, a well-structured diet allows you to achieve a good intake of Omega 3. However, in the presence of low fish consumption, increased needs or specific conditions, personalized supplementation can be considered.
It is important to avoid "do-it-yourself": product quality, dosage and individual need make all the difference.
Rather than focusing on the individual supplement, the real goal should be to adopt an overall balanced eating style, rich in fish, nuts, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. The brain works every day for us: memory, emotions, decisions, creativity. Feed him consistently!
